The interactive aspect of surveys is important because it gives your audience a chance to communicate with you instead of it always being the other way around.

The other reason you should start doing surveys is because it puts you in touch with what your audience really wants. Often it’s tempting, as marketers, to try to guess what our prospects or customers want. Actually, with few exceptions, it’s presumptuous of us to do this.

In fact, one of the best ways to figure out what people on your list want is this simple: ask them!

If you ask me, audiences respond to surveys. So for me it’s a worthwhile procedure to implement and use on a regular basis.

It’s true, there are other ways to ask your audience for feedback, but few are as flexible and as powerful as a good ‘ol online survey.

You might already know of a handful of places online where you can get an account and create your own surveys.

Most of these services didn’t cut it for me. Some had restrictions on the number of surveys you can create. Others limited how many people can take the survey. Others made setting up and managing surveys counterintuitive. And so on. And generally the better ones wanted a monthly fee.

I have nothing against services that charge a monthly fee. But I didn’t feel it was worth paying one to a survey service.

So instead of going with a free or paid hosted solution, I set up my own. And now I can quickly and easily create online surveys, collect data and view live results to my heart’s content.
