5 Copywriting Tips to Remember

September 27th, 2007 by Administrator

Do you struggle to write copy? You’re not alone. But I have some tips for you that can make the process easier…

Good copywriting is one of the pillars of a highly successful business. Yet while on one hand it’s so important, on the other, copywriting is also often perceived as an activity that requires special talent.

Yes, it’s true… great copywriters are a minority and are considered by many to be demi-gods. But even you, mere mortal, are capable of writing copy that sells, if you keep in mind a few tips I’ll outline below.

Most successful internet marketers I’ve met all started writing their own copy. And even though today they use professional copywriters, these marketers still have to give the copy their final approval before the work is released to the world.

Here are the tips I mentioned above:

1) Just do it - If you have a writing project that needs to get done, whether it’s a new sales letter, autoresponder email, ebook or blog post, set some time aside and start writing.

2) Turn off the editor - Resist the tempation to edit your thoughts. Your mission is to let your ideal flow freely from your mind to your keyboard or paper. You are prohibited from using cut/copy or paste. Just write.

3) Use a formula - Let your writing be guided by a copywriting formula. For example, in advertising, there is a famous formula called AIDA, which stands for Attention, Interest, Desire and Action. There are tons of formulas, so don’t get bogged down. Just start with AIDA and you can improve later.

4) Test methodically - The copywriters who get the best results are always testing and always trying to improve their results. In the industry, you will hear terms like split testing and beating controls. Not only do many newbie internet marketers switch things around impatiently when they don’t get the results they wanted, they also do this without measuring and comparing results methodically. One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. The best experimenters have detailed lab books of every experiment.

5) Start and use a swipe file - Simply put, a swipe file is a fancy term for a collection of your favorite copywriting. Make a habit today of clipping, printing and saving copy that grabbed your attention and got you to read what followed. Even better, organize your swipe file. And next time you start writing, flip through your swipe file for ideas.

Like with most anything, to get good at copywriting, you need to practice. So get started today.

By the way, why not post your copywriting tips here as a comment?

To lasting profits!
