I was checking out a couple of blogs I hadn’t visited in quite a while. One of them had my attention for a good 15 minutes. Why? Because this very successful blogger was doing some interesting things with his blog’s structure.

There were a handful of things I made a note of. But one thing I noticed just had to be implemented on the spot on this blog, because it should have been part of one of my procedures but it fell through the cracks…

Here’s the tip: put a link in your WordPress footer to your own home page, using a keyword you want to rank for in the search engines.

If you know what I mean when I say “rank,” skip to the next paragraph. If you don’t… well, when I say pick a keyword you want to rank for in the search engines, I mean this: what keywords would you use to describe your business that you imagine people would type into a search engine like Google, Yahoo! or MSN to find you? So for example, if you are a dentist in Memphis, you might say “dentist memphis.” There’s the keyword you might use in your WordPress footer.

Keep in mind that you might not ever rank well for that keyword if this is all you do. Some keywords are very competitive, meaning that there are lots of other sites that might rank better than you for that keyword. But if you’ve done your keyword research homework (this isn’t complicated, and you can benefit from my Google Analytics Vol. 1 DVD as a starter), this tip will help maximize your rankings.
