Time Sequencing, Not Time Management

March 20th, 2008 by Administrator

Hi,

If you actually think about it, time management is not what it’s all about.

Even though time management is important, what’s even more important is time sequencing or activity sequencing. In other words, doing the right thing at the right time.

If you don’t know the thing to do at the right time, then you’re going to need to enlist your team, your partners or mentors to help you figure that out. In life and in business, there often are many ways to accomplish a goal… goals like losing weight, getting accepted to a top university, getting a business loan, or even increasing Web traffic. And usually some sequences are significantly more effective than others at achieving the desired result.

If you’re not aware of that sequence or if you’re not paying attention to it, then you’re just postponing the inevitable. In this case, either you will never achieve your goal or it will take you a really, really long time which will cost you time, money, energy, and disappointment.

Finally let me tie this back to techniques and frameworks for better goal accomplishment…

One resource you might check out is Getting Things Done by David Allen, where you identify the next most important task to do in any given project. This is related to the sequencing. Breaking down a project and making sure that at any given time you’re working on the right piece of the puzzle at the right time.

Or perhaps it’s time to dust off that copy of Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Your roles and the importance you place on them also can help you better sequence your time.

…By the way, I’m sure you already know that if you need advice figuring out one sequence or another, you should seek the help of someone who’s done it.

Ciao,

-Taylor
