What To Do When You Are Stuck

May 29th, 2008 by Administrator

Recently a client of mine needed some help.

In the course of helping this client come up with solutions, we discovered she didn’t know she can save a Web page to her hard drive.

Now before I go on, in case you’re wondering why you might want to do that, it’s simple… You save a Web page because you think it will be of some use to you. For example, as someone who does Internet marketing, you might find the copy on particular page did a good job grabbing your attention. Or you might like the page layout. Or maybe you came across some useful information and want to make sure you have it handy even where you’re not connected to the Internet.

Back to my client… She’s a highly educated and successful business person who knows more about running a profitable Internet business than most people. Still, she didn’t know that whenever she finds a Web page she likes, she can save it to her hard drive just like she does all the time when she save a spreadsheet or a letter using her favorite desktop software. Does saving a Web page from your Web browser seem kind of obvious to you? Not for my client.

So there are several lessons. And I will let you in on 2 of them.

The first lesson and suggestion will help you when you are feeling stuck.

See, when you feel stuck in a particular situation, it’s natural to think you have no options.

And that is true partly because of your specific thoughts, feelings, emotions, and perspective at that point in time. That’s why, for example, sometimes it is good advice just to “sleep on it.”

But what if you have slept on it plenty and still find yourself out of options or with no solution in sight?

That’s when you should stop wasting energy and time and go ask someone else for advice!

Remember the last time you got some advice that made you say “Ah, yes, perfect, it’s clear now!” That’s precisely how someone else can give you more options and can bring an entirely fresh perspective to your problem. That person, someone like me, through my aha email coaching, can make your problem vanish in a flash.

I share this second lesson to remind you that all of us often forget how competent we are at one thing or another. So let me relate this to feeling stuck again. This tip is for you if you want to start making money online rather than at your day job and are struggling figuring out what to do.

Carve some time out of your busy day, as few as 5 minutes. Grab yourself a sheet of paper. Divide the sheet into 3 columns. In these 5 minutes you are going to make yourself a list.

In the first column, list 10 things you do that you find come really easy to you.

Then copy any items from column 1 into column 2 that you enjoy. Remember, only copy into column 2 those items you enjoy.

Finally, in column 3 list the items from column 2 that you would like to do on a regular basis.

Now consider what you might do online that has you concentrating, engaged in or working on items in column 3.

Ciao,

-Taylor

I agree, Its always a learning experience when you ask someone else for help. Remember, everyone has different experiences and from these they gain a different view then one that you might have. Take advantage of this and you will learn more then you ever could if you tried to do it all alone!

Interesting article, and I like your advice on writing things down when you start to get stuck. I’m not sure I would do it in exactly the same way, because I’m more the type that writes prose rather than makes lists when it comes to analyzing problems. Still, writing to come up with new ideas is a great way to get out of a rut.

it was a good post, and great idea. Oftentimes people get where they are not by knowing how to do everything, but by knowing where to find the answers to the things they don’t. You started with a great example and opportunity. The buildup was good, but then it transitioned to something that was completely irrelevant to what drew me in.

Thanks for a very insightful post. When doing the 3 column exercise it’s also important to list the things you’re good at even if they seem ‘ordinary’. We sometimes don’t give ourselves credit and assume that everybody knows what we know when in fact, the expertise you’ve gained could be invaluable to someone else.
